Return of the Queen’s Royal Standard

Motion Graphics

  • Overview

On July 24, 2023, Queen Liliʻuokalani’s Royal Standard was formally returned to her former residence at Washington Place for the first time since it was seized during the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This powerful and symbolic homecoming marked a moment of deep cultural significance for Hawaiʻi, representing the restoration of a piece of the Queen’s legacy and the resilience of Native Hawaiian identity.

  • Contributions

I served as creative lead for the broadcast, creating the full visual introduction and all motion graphics, including titles, transitions, and lower-thirds that reflected the historical and cultural importance of the ceremony. I also worked closely with State Archivist Adam Jansen to select music that aligned with the tone and legacy of Queen Liliʻuokalani.

In addition to broadcast design, I provided behind-the-scenes footage for social media, helping share the event’s significance with a wider online audience.

  • Impact

This ceremony brought together government leaders, descendants of the Hawaiian monarchy, and cultural organizations in a moment of healing and unity. The Queen’s Royal Standard now resides at the State Archives, where it serves as both an educational resource and a restored piece of Hawaiʻi’s sovereign legacy.
